Fitness professionals may not be therapists or psychologists, but they play an important role in the mental health and wellbeing of their clientele. Trauma from one-time or ongoing events is prevalent and impacts all of us. Collectively, our sense of belonging, connection and safety have been threatened with Covid-19, racial violence, political upheaval, global uncertainty and environmental disasters, and numerous studies have demonstrated that exercise is vital to our mental health, not just physical health. Group fitness classes should be stress-reducing, and a healthy haven from outside stressors, and becoming trauma-informed is the beginning of an awareness journey as a socially responsible fitness practitioner. This workshop will provide practical ways to apply diversity, equity and inclusion principles and create a space of psychological safety for fitness class participants.
Presenter: Rachel Frost holds a Master of Arts degree in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, in addition to being a NETA-Certified Group Exercise Instructor and Wellness Coach. Rachel currently works as a senior talent development specialist at Amplifon, a global hearing health care company, and has over 20 years experience instructing and developing training programs. Pilates has been a tried-and-true exercise format since its induction in 1920’s, seeing boosts in popularity throughout history. 2023 brought a huge resurgence in Pilates as the format consistently provides a low-impact, challenging means of improving physical and mental health while reducing risk of injury and developing physical asthetic and a strong foundation for complex movements. Due to these proposed benefits and its low-impact, scaleable nature, Pilates is an ideal form of exercise for older adults seeking to maintain strength, mobility, and independence. This three-hour workshop will identify and adapt the principles of Pilates for an older crowd, modifying exercises for a chair-based workout appropriate for all levels.

Yoga practice has long been recognized as a means of improving mindfulness, but the benefits of yoga on the brain extend beyond a mind-body connection. A growing body of research points to yoga as a means of enhancing mental clarity and focus; increasing cognitive function; and improving attention, memory, and overall cognitive processing. Further, yoga has been shown to improve executive function and working memory in older adults and support neuroplasticity and brain health in aging individuals. This three-hour workshop will dive into the research surrounding yoga and cognitive function, identifying specific practices that may be incorporated into class programming to support the brain health of participants of all ages and stages of life.
Yoga and Cognitive Health is NOT a part of the NETA 200 Hour Yoga Program curriculum, and may only be used for continuing education credits.
