Exercise programming for older adults holds the number three spot in trending fitness topics for 2025. Athletes, according to Merriam-Webster, are people trained or skilled in exercise, sports, or games requiring strength, agility, or stamina. From adolescents (10-21 years old) to seniors participating in group fitness classes, athletes are found in all walks of life. This one-hour presentation will equip fitness professionals in integrating holistic training strategies in their training and instruction, to include proper fueling, effective training, and reducing risk of illness and injury. Participants will learn how psychological and physiological development are connected to diet, sleep, environment, physical activity, and recovery, and how to recognize the early warning signs of cognitive strain, low energy availability, and potential risks of illness or injury development.
Presenter: Alicia E. DuCote is a NASM certified Performance Enhancement Specialist, Sports Nutrition Coach and holds a Master of Exercise Science degree from California University of Pennsylvania. She is pursuing a Doctor of Health Science and Exercise Leadership degree (DHSc) from Pennsylvania Western University (formerly California University of Pennsylvania) with an anticipated completion in 2026. She currently works for Raccoon Bend Farms, in Louisiana, where she and her husband have transformed their urban homestead into a fully organic market garden and holistic education training facility serving their local community with education and access to quality food sources.

NETA’s Nutrition Coach Specialty Certification is for group exercise instructors and personal trainers seeking to further their profession by providing quality nutrition education and behavioral change strategies to clients and participants. The workshop will include an in-depth look at the essential nutrients and how they are utilized, a review of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, an overview of dietary supplements, and tips for influencing participants toward healthier eating habits, to include motivational interviewing strategies, all while staying within scope of practice. Upon completion of the workshop and online exam, participants will earn the NETA Specialty Certification of a Nutrition Coach.
Presenter: Deanna Reiter started coaching in 1996 and became certified as a personal trainer in 2004. She has a B.S. and Master’s degree, and her certifications include: USATF Coach, ACE Personal Trainer, Group Exercise, Pilates, Yoga, BOSU and Kettlebell. She has been a master trainer with NETA since 2005. Each year, the popularity of Pilates grows as more people become aware of the incredible benefits of this unique form of exercise. If you always wanted to learn how to teach Pilates but never knew where to learn the tools necessary to be an effective and knowledgeable instructor, NETA has the answer.
This specialty workshop not only introduces the fundamental principles of Pilates, but teaches you how to apply them through 33 different exercises. In addition to the fundamental principles of core stabilization and posture alignment as they apply to basic Pilates mat work, you’ll also learn effective ways of cuing, correcting form and applying modifications.

Fitness enthusiasts love group exercise classes for the guidance and motivation of the instructor, the energy and shared support of participants, and the accountability a group-setting provides. However, addressing the individual needs, goals, and abilities of a diverse group, and ensuring each is working at appropriate levels can be a challenge for instructors – both in-person and when teaching virtually. Pilates has been a tried-and-true exercise format since its induction in 1920’s, seeing boosts in popularity throughout history. 2023 brought a huge resurgence in Pilates as the format consistently provides a low-impact, challenging means of improving physical and mental health while reducing risk of injury and developing physical asthetic and a strong foundation for complex movements. Due to these proposed benefits and its low-impact, scaleable nature, Pilates is an ideal form of exercise for older adults seeking to maintain strength, mobility, and independence. This three-hour workshop will identify and adapt the principles of Pilates for an older crowd, modifying exercises for a chair-based workout appropriate for all levels.

NETA’s Weight Management Specialty Certificate is designed to equip fitness professionals with the knowledge and competencies required to integrate safe and effective weight management strategies into their practice. Emphasis is placed on the scientific principles of energy balance, nutrition, and exercise programming, as well as behavior modification and client adherence strategies. NETA’s Personal Trainer Certification Review Virtual Workshop features up to 12 hours of interactive lecture and discussion. The virtual review workshop provides an excellent opportunity to put the final touches on your exam preparations and to interact with one of NETA’s well-qualified national presenters.
Virtual workshop registration includes the Premier Plus Study Package (The Fitness Professional’s Manual, Workbook, Practice Exam, and Online Review Modules) and the computer-based Personal Trainer Certification Exam administered via live remote online proctoring with ProctorU.
To successfully prepare, NETA recommends that candidates devote an appropriate amount of time (e.g., at least 30-45 days) and effort to self-directed study prior to attempting the examination.
Presenter: Jon Staton has been teaching for NETA since 2002. He currently works for the Tucson Unified School District as a High School Physical Education Teacher. He has served as the Department Chair/Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at Odessa College, Assistant Professor of HPER at Glenville State College, and Assistant Professor of HPER at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. He holds a Master’s in Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota. He also has 50 graduate credits towards his doctorate. He is an active member in NSCA, USA Weightlifting, Livestrong & AAPHERD. NETA’s intensive Yoga Foundations blended learning specialty certification includes a two components: a self-paced online module and a live instructor-led clinic. Participants must complete the Yoga Foundations online module prior to attending this live, 6-hour pose clinic.
The online module provides a practical and interactive experience in teaching beginner yoga formats through learning the basics of class formatting, yoga history and exploration of the 8 limbs, anatomy and physiology of the nervous and respiratory systems, and how to encourage and motivate your participants through verbal refinements and inclusive cuing. The required pose clinic breaks down 20 foundational poses, focusing on alignment, safety, variations, and breathing, equipping participants to sequence and lead a beginning-level yoga class.
This specialty certification will provide two sample beginning yoga classes as well as time for practice all led by an experienced yoga teacher. Yoga Foundations is the first required course for NETA’s 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program or it can be taken as a stand-alone Specialty Certification.
Please note that BOTH the 14-hour Yoga Foundations online module AND the 6-hour Yoga Foundations pose clinic must be completed, along with an open-note online exam in order to receive the specialty certificate and 20 continuing education credits.

Yoga has been long- and widely-recognized as a means of improving wellness across all elements of health, through all seasons of life. This three-hour workshop offers a holistic approach to supporting women through the menopause transition, using the ancient wisdom of yoga and the koshas-the five layers of being. Participants will explore how menopause affects each kosha, including the physical, energetic, mental, wisdom, and bliss bodies. In menopause yoga, we will use asana, breath work, meditation, and self-inquiry to learn how to balance and nurture ourselves.
Presenter: Jennifer Turpin Stanfield is a professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. She received her master’s degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from The Ohio State University. She is a certified Exercise Physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine and a Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher (E-RYT 200). She also holds the NETA-CPT and ACE-GFI credentials. She is passionate about helping others pursue better health and wellness through the adoption of positive health behaviors.

It’s estimated that one-third of participants in a mainstream yoga class have experienced significant trauma. In this workshop, yoga’s effects on the autonomic nervous system will be examined, as well as recommended practices and contraindicated positions. Class and instructor considerations will also be addressed, providing participants with the insight to handle victims of trauma in a mainstream class.

Fitness professional working with an older adult population face unique programming challenges when working around orthopedic issues associated with aging.
