A Transformative Spring: Recapping NETA’s Yoga Training Month and Pilates Month
This spring fitness professionals from across the country came together virtually to expand their knowledge, refine their teaching skills, and deepen their passion for mindful movement during NETA’s Yoga Training Month (April) and Pilates Month (May). These month-long educational events offered a unique opportunity for instructors to earn continuing education credits (CEC’s), pursue specialty certificates, and connect with industry experts — all from the comfort of home.
Yoga Training Month: Building Confident, Knowledgeable Yoga Instructors
April’s Yoga Training Month provided a comprehensive learning experience for instructors at every stage of their journey. Designed to support both continuing education and progress toward NETA’s Yoga Alliance-approved 200-hour yoga teacher training program, the event featured a diverse lineup of workshops and specialty certificates.
This year’s event featured a biweekly lunchtime yoga series, with one-hour workshops offered on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Topics covered included:
- Yoga sequencing and creative class design
- Yoga capsules and habit formation
- Creating experiences with effective cueing
- Better breathing practices
- Yoga and the fascial system
- Creating inclusive classes
- Recovery tips and techniques
One of the most rewarding aspects of the month was the opportunity for participants to engage in practice teaching, receive feedback, and build confidence in their ability to lead safe and effective yoga experiences for diverse populations. From instructors just starting their journey through the blended learning Yoga Foundations, to those specializing in yoga for seniors, April provided an opportunity for like-minded professionals to connect and grow together.
Pilates Month: Elevating the Mind-Body Connection
Following Yoga Training Month, Pilates Month continued the momentum by offering instructors an immersive exploration of Pilates principles and programming. Created for fitness professionals seeking new certifications and continuing education opportunities, May highlighted the versatility and continually growing popularity of Pilates as both a fitness modality and a movement practice.
Featured workshops included:
- Pilates Mat Specialty Certificate
- Pilates Reformer on the Floor
- Principles of Wall Pilates
- Pilates for Older Adults
- Suspension Trainer Pilates
- Foam Roller Pilates
Throughout the month, participants learned how to apply Pilates principles to a variety of settings and equipment, making the method more accessible to clients and group fitness participants. Workshops focused on core strength, alignment, mobility, precision, control, and functional movement while providing instructors with practical programming ideas they could immediately incorporate into their classes.
From translating reformer exercises to the mat to utilizing walls and foam rollers as training tools, Pilates month demonstrated that effective Pilates instruction can be delivered in numerous creative and accessible ways.
The Power of Continuing Education
Both Yoga Training Month and Pilates Month reinforced a central theme: great instructors never stop learning. Continuing education plays a critical role in helping fitness professionals remain effective, relevant, and confident in an every-evolving field. New research, training methodologies, coaching techniques, and client needs emerge every year, making ongoing professional development essential for long-term success.
Continuing education also enhances teaching confidence. Exposure to new ideas, hands-on practice, and feedback from experienced educators can help instructors refine their cueing, improve class design, and develop more effective communication skills. As instructors gain additional tools and strategies, they become better equipped to adapt classes, accommodate varying ability levels, and create positive experiences for participants.
Perhaps most importantly, continuing education reignites passion. Attending workshops, engaging with fellow professionals, and discovering new approaches to movement often reminds instructors why the entered the industry in the first place. Learning alongside peers creates a sense of community, encourages the exchange of new ideas, and inspires creativity that can reinvigorate teaching practices.
By bringing together experienced presenters, evidence-based education, and hands-on learning opportunities, NETA created two months of professional development that empowered instructors to grow their expertise and expand their impact.
Looking Ahead
As another successful spring of virtual education comes to a close, the connections made, skills developed, and knowledge gained will continue to influence participants’ teaching for years to come. Whether attendees joined for a single lunchtime session, or pursued multiple specialty certificates, Yoga Training Month and Pilates Month showcased the value of lifelong learning and the transformative power of movement education.
Thank you to all of the presenters, participants, and professionals who made these events a success. We look forward to continuing the journey of education, growth, and inspiration next year!
