“Whether you’re a dancer, an athlete, or simply someone who wants to feel stronger and move
better, building a strong foundation matters. Strength, control, mobility, and endurance aren’t
developed through one type of movement alone; they come from consistent training, intentional
conditioning, and challenging your body in different ways.
For this week’s Fitness Focus Friday, I’m putting the spotlight on the upper body, and the important role shoulder strength plays in everyday movement, fitness, and performance. When we think about strength training, it’s easy to focus on the legs and core. But a strong upper body is just as important for maintaining good posture, improving stability, moving with confidence, and performing everyday activities with greater control.
Grab Those Light Dumbbells!
You don’t need heavy weights to challenge your shoulders. Light dumbbells, paired with
controlled movement and proper form, can create an effective workout designed to build
muscular endurance, strength, and stability.
The Sequence:
1. L-Raises
A dynamic variation, where one arm lifts straight out to the front while the other lifts to the side, forming an “L” shape at the top. Alternating sides challenges your coordination and forces your core to stabilize against asymmetrical weight.
2. Overhead Press
The overhead press develops shoulder and upper-body strength while challenging your core to
stabilize your body. Keep your ribs controlled and press with intention.
3. Bent-Arm Lateral Raises
By keeping a fixed 90-degree bend at your elbows as you lift your upper arms to shoulder height, you shorten the lever arm. This takes stress off your joints, and allows you to isolate the side delts with precision and control.
4. Overhead Arm Circles
Don’t underestimate the burn! Small, but controlled circles create plenty of time under tension and are a great way to build shoulder stability and dynamic endurance.
5. Scaption Raises
Lifting at a 30-degree forward angle in a natural “V” shape, this subtle angle keeps your shoulders in their natural movement plane. Which makes this movement a safe, joint-friendly way to target both the front and side deltoids.
Why Does Upper-Body Strength Matter?
Strong shoulders and a strong upper body help us maintain better posture, improve stability, and
move with greater control and confidence. Whether you’re dancing, playing a sport, working out, carrying groceries, lifting your kids, working at a desk, or simply going about your day, your upper body is constantly contributing to how you move.
Strength training can also help improve body awareness, muscular endurance, coordination,
and overall functional movement. The goal isn’t simply to look stronger; it’s to feel stronger and
move better in everything you do.
Training Beyond the Workout
Cross-training and strength training aren’t just for athletes. They’re valuable tools for anyone
looking to build a stronger, more capable body. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym or lift heavy weights to make progress. Start with a few intentional movements, focus on quality over quantity, and stay consistent. Strong legs. Strong core. Strong shoulders. Stronger you.
Save this workout, grab your light dumbbells, and add it to your next training session!
I truly believe fitness should help you move better, feel stronger, and build
confidence that carries far beyond your workout. Whether you’re training for a specific sport,
supporting your dance practice, or simply working toward a healthier, stronger you, every
movement is a step toward a stronger foundation.”
